HEADCANONS PAGE
I JUST LOVe ruby so much he's my fucking child i adore him and i guess it's mostly pokespe i get these things from idk if you read pokespe? but it's wonderful because they make him the one that loves contests and sewing and making his pokemon beautiful and lovely instead of making may/sapphire the one? although i love in the anime that they make her that way and the way she develops is really good BUT I LOVE that they flipped the gender role here and made sapphire the battler and not the boy I JUST
i love to think that he has a lot of issues because of his interests and his father hating/TRYING TO KILL HIM (canon, gj norman) because he doesn't want to battle his pokemon and do contests instead. it definitely makes me think of japanese gender roles WHICH IS A WHOLE OTHER CONVERSATION ABOUT HOW THATS A COMMENTARY ON IT but wow like i feel like he'd be so confused about himself that way? because he's not the boy his father wanted him to be or that he's not like the other young boys who want to go out and become pokemon masters and stuff and i just love the idea that he would question himself? and since he's 11 obviously this is all really sensitive to me because like.... i didn't really get my own sexuality/know what that meant then? so honestly he could develop however he wants later (which is why i say queer instead of labeling him as gay or whatever)
BUT ALSO because he is 11 and has a simpler view on these things he'd REALLY WONDER what's ""wrong"" with himself i guess? Like, why isn't he like other boys? Why is he more like girls? Does that make him a girl? And on and on, I feel like he'd really struggle with that... and meeting sapphire makes him wonder how "wrong" it is compared to what his father says/does to him? (because in pokespe she's really tomboyish and wild and very stereo typically boy like?) and that would confuse him a little (again, he's 11,) and make him wonder how different people can be? and maybe that it's okay for him to be more "girl like" when sapphire is more "boy like"? and these terms are kind of problematic but i don't really know how to say it another way so im sorry if im saying the wrong thing.
but anyway meeting sapphire really makes him feel more confident about himself and how he can go against his father's opinions on him doing contests and sewing and liking make up and being gentle and etc. and he's more open to explore on his journey to get all of the contest ribbons. and when his dad TRIES TO MURDER HIM (again, canon, thank you norman what the FUCK) over him not coming home and doing what he's told it really hurts him? because yeah in the end norman tells him that he can do contests whatever he can't control him anymore and the manga plays it off a lot as WOW WHAT A GOOD DAD!!!! what the fuck that's terrible? and ruby hearing that "wow it's so good of him to STOP ATTEMPTING TO MURDER YOU AND LET YOU DO CONTESTS" would really be the last bit of him that cares about what his father thinks and going on to do what HE WANTS instead and this would be super liberating? even if he doesn't understand how he feels (again, 11,) it would be so nice for him.
the manga doesn't cover how he feels about what his dad's done to him (besides generic raaaaa i hate you dad!!!! stuff) so it's kind of a fill in the blank because that reaction he gets from the people who WITNESSED him doing this to ruby is not right and definitely horrible and i dont like thinking about it being real so its a headcanon but i dont CARE so then ruby is free to do contests, horray!!! whatever, he's still hiding from his dad even though he isn't looking for him anymore? and later on norman blames him for "ruining his life" when ruby was SIX so there's literally nothing that can redeem pokespe norman for me oops whatever ANYWAY so ruby finally meets wallace who is his HERO AND HES SO COOL and he's this awesome dude who's a gym leader and cool and awesome and LIKES FASHION AND CLOTHES AND DOES POKEMON CONTESTS!!! wow! ruby's never been around an older man who likes those things (except the pokemon fanclub president briefly who only liked WATCHING contests from what i remember)
so like thats the best thing in the world to him? and he asks wallace to be his sensei and stuff but i just picture wallace being the answer to ruby's questions about himself (or some of them) because wallace must know how he feels? and he looks up to him because he's not like his dad (casually projects my WALLACE PLS ADOPT RUBY feels onto this) and he encourages ruby to do what he likes and explore how he feels about his contests and his pokemon's contest capabilities and stuff and thats REALLY COOL to ruby and he really likes it!! and he opens up to wallace and wallace doesn't influence him one way or another because pokespe wallace is a fucking boss and loves expression and art and shit AND HAS A FLYING CAR???? and god i just love their relationship in pokespe because he's the first adult you genuinely see care about ruby? because his mom doesn't even care about him that much she just wants ruby to come home SO NORMAN WILL but
wow yeah i have way too many angry feelings about ruby's parents BUT i just love wallace influencing ruby into exploring himself and not feeling bad about it anymore and he just starts to accept his feelings for what they are. and he starts to find that he likes being more feminine even if it means being misunderstood by most of the people around him because wallace accepts him for who he is and as he grows up he feels more fluid than static in his gender and sexuality (he admits having a crush on sapphire but that obv doesn't make him cishet) and wow this is GETTING REALLY LONG IM SORRY
